Legend of the NaupakaPrincess Naupaka fell deeply in love with a commoner, but because of their different social status, they could not be together. Heartbroken, they were forced to separate. Naupaka went toward the mountains, while her beloved went toward the sea. As they parted, Naupaka took a flower and tore it in half. This is said to explain why naupaka flowers often appear with only half a blossom—one growing near the mountains and the other along the coast, forever separated yet always connected.
